The FLOTE Stand for Tablets and eBook Readers

The FLOTE Stand for Tablets and eBook Readers
Published on The Gadgeteer | shared via feedly mobile

Here’s another Kickstarter project. The FLOTE Stand is a floor stand that works with most tablets and eBook readers, with or without a cover. The all-metal stand is machined by US craftsmen, and it’s available in aluminum, black, or white finishes. It easily adjusts without having to loosen or tighten anything, and it has a small base that will slide easily over hard-surface floors or carpets. Be prepared to pledge at least $245 to receive a FLOTE stand if the product is funded. Smaller pledges will receive FLOTE-branded screen cloths, hoodies, or commemorative steel plaques, depending on the level of support. Estimated shipping is March 2012, should they meet their funding goals. They have just under 50% of the required funding, and you have until January 13th, 2012 to help them meet their goal.

Does WiFi Help or Hurt Battery Life? (Editorial)
Published on pocketnow.com | shared via feedly mobile
Yesterday I wrote an article about the five things you should do right away after you get a new Android-powered smartphone. One of my recommendations was that you turn WiFi on as soon as you can -- for a few reasons. The theory is that WiFi is generally faster than 3G, and can be faster than 4G in practical use. Using WiFi can save your 3G/4G data ... Read More

Verizon Has Certified Pre-Owned Devices On Sale through Dec. 29th

Verizon Has Certified Pre-Owned Devices On Sale through Dec. 29th
Published on Android Phone Fans | shared via feedly mobile

Looking to score a deal on Verizon’s already discounted selection of certified pre-owned devices? You have until December 29th to do so. We’re reporting a little late on a 7-day sale that sees some good savings on used and refurbished items. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, for instance, is marked down $80 to $349.99 on a two-year contract for the 16GB model. The 32GB version is going for $449.99 during the same sale. A pre-owned HTC Thunderbolt will cost you only $69.99. Deals are to be found on nearly every item knocking prices all the way down to free for select handsets (the Droid Pro, for instance). Since there is a limited stock of certified pre-owned devices it is best to act quickly before time (and inventory) runs out.

Fighting Terrorism, One Snow Cone at a Time

Fighting Terrorism, One Snow Cone at a Time
Published on Dvorak News Blog | shared via feedly mobile

The WMSRDC recently purchased and transferred homeland security equipment to these counties — including 13 snow cone machines at a total cost of $11,700.

The machines were funded by a grant from the Michigan Homeland Security Program. The request for a snow cone machine came from another county, but all 13 counties received them.

The purchase raised some questions at a recent Montcalm County Board of Commissioners meeting. Commissioners wondered about the machine and questioned its purpose.
[...]
WMSRDC Executive Director Sandeep Dey said one county requested a popcorn machine, but that request was denied.
[...]
“It is used to attract people so they can be educated and prepared for homeland security,” Dey said from his office in Muskegon. “More importantly, they (homeland security officials) felt in a medical emergency the machine was capable of making ice packs which could be used for medical purposes.”

Are you, “…educated and prepared for homeland security?”

Video: Plasma Torch Toothbrush Successfully Used In Human Mouth

Video: Plasma Torch Toothbrush Successfully Used In Human Mouth
Plasma Brush on Dentist Missouri University

Attentive followers of dentistry developments that we are, we've been following the story of the plasma brush for awhile now. And it seems like it's making some serious progress: human clinical trials are supposed to begin in early 2012, and there's also a video (below) of the World's Bravest Dentist shooting a plasma beam into his own mouth.

Some background, for anyone who doesn't subscribe to Dentistry Illustrated Weekly: the plasma brush isn't a toothbrush, but actually a tool dentists are hoping to use for two primary situations. The first is breaking up plaque; the plasma torch, though it's no hotter than room temperature, is excellent at breaking the bonds that adhere plaque to a tooth. The second is as a sort of primer for filling cavities.

There are certain kinds of cavities, according to Hao Li, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering in the Missouri University University of Missouri College of Engineering, that need to be refilled every five or seven years using current technology--and they can only be refilled a few times before having to be pulled. The plasma brush can prime a cavity for filling in sort of the same way pavers create those divots in roads before filling them in with new asphalt: it provides more surface area for the filling to stick to, and the research team claims plasma-assisted fillings could be 60% stronger than traditional fillings.

Human clinical trials are due to begin early next year at the University of Tennessee at Memphis, with the team hoping the tool could be approved by the FDA and available to dentists by 2013.
