I remember having radio phones installed in the ambulances I drove back in 1974-75. They were the precursor to the cell phone installation which were similar to two way radios in whch the guts (transceiver) was mounted in the trunk of the car or under a seat if it would fit.
I got my first bag cell phone in 1990, and my first hand held with car kit five years later. The car kit change the hand held from a 0.6 watt hand held into a 3 watt mobile. Back then a three watt mobile was needed outside the cities as the cell towers were so far apart. This changed the range of the cellphone from under 5 miles to 30 plus miles.
I once made call on my bag phone when I was in Oscoda Michigan by the signal skipping across Lake Huron to a Roger's Cellular tower in Canada. Back then, there wasn't any Cellular coverage north of Pinconning Michigan.
