Talk on a Cell phone and drive like you're drunk

I have a 90 mile daily commute and see a lot of things on the highway and city streets during my drive. One of the most common is people with a phone pasted to their head, weaving in and out of their lane, speeding up and slowing down.  In essence, driving as if they are drunk or high on drugs.  When I see this I frequently shake my head and think if you have to talk on the phone while driving get yourself a hands free headset*.

I use a Bluetooth headset 95% of the time when I'm driving, but I've had to talk on my cell phone while driving with the phone to my head and using the headset.  Using the headset doesn't impair my ability to look around from traffic and I find it hardly distracting. If for some reason I don't have my headset on and the call is lasting more that a minute, I'm looking for a place to park while I talk, or switch to the headset.  Having the phone to my head is just to distracting and uncomfortable.

Wired headset start around $10 and up.  You can get a decent Motorola or Plantonics Bluetooth headset from Amazon or the Cell Phone Shop.com for around $30 to $35.  Some of the models in this price range even connect to 2 phones.  Today's headset have excellent background road noise cancellation built in.

Back in 1990 when I got my first cell phone, a shoe box size bag phone, the hands free was a microphone on a 5 or 10 wire that you clipped to your clothes by your head or in the car near your head and a speaker built into the bag phone.  They didn't have noise canceling and they were useless with highway road noise.

So with the price of hands free headsets and the improved noise cancelation there's no reason you need to drive with a phone pasted to your head.

* There are some people and I've seen them that just can't talk on the phone without getting so involved that they loose track of what's going on around them.  These people should never talk on a cell phone while driving.
