If IMDB is to be believed, Gravity is Alfonso Cuaron's first film on the big screen since 2006′s excellent Children of Men. The teaser for Gravity, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, came out a few days ago and I've watched it a couple of times since then. I'm not sure what to think. Here's the synopsis:
Academy award winners Sandra Bullock and George Clooney star in "Gravity," a heart-pounding thriller that pulls you into the infinite and unforgiving realm of deep space. The film was directed by Oscar nominee Alfonso Cuarón. Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone—tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to earth…and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.
I've seen some criticism of this film (already!) as nothing more than Open Water in space. I get that, but done well does it matter? I like the way this looks, but the one thing nagging me is that "thriller" tag. I don't see how two people, alone, in Earth orbit with dwindling oxygen can be anything other than an intense character study. The synopsis also mentions "deep space" (how do they get there again?) and they only way home being further out (a la the Moon in Space 1999)? Those two things alone cause me concern for the believability of the film. Unless Cuaron goes all SF on us and tosses in some giant alien-ish curve balls. I do like the way this looks and I'm willing to be persuaded it'll be worth a watch.
