Last evening I went off road 4 wheeling in the fields of Waterloo Recreation area with my RAV4 hybrid all wheel drive.
1st the RAV4 hybrid can't complete with the off road performance of a true 4X4 like Jeep, 4Runner, Land Cruiser, Hummer, etc., But it's superior to 2 wheel drive.
2nd Traction control. Turning it off made a big difference in the deep snow in starting from a stop, keep going, going up hills or rocking the vehicle to get unstuck (which I had to do). Example if I didn't have enough initial speed to make it over the hill, letting of the gas to idle and the a smooth acceleration got me over the hill without having to back down and try again.
1 big misunderstanding on 4X4 and all wheel drive vehicles, is that they give you the best control and performance at a speed of 25 MPH or less. Also It doesn't help with stopping. It only helps you to get moving on slick roads and parking lots and maintain control at slow speed. They can spin out at high speeds just as easily as 2 wheel drive vehicles.
