I grabbed Shelley‘s AR yesterday to take some pictures of the Crimson Trace Rail Master I’d mounted on it. Her rifle is a Daniel Defense build with a new Centurion Rail on it, and even for someone who doesn’t really care about ARs, I have to say that her rifle is the hotness.
Talking to pdb about this the other day, we both agreed that M4 style rifles with 16 inch barrels look way better when the handguard comes almost to the muzzle. Rifles with a ton of exposed barrel, which is very common on most factory M4gery type guns just don’t look as good as guns that are set up like Shelley’s rifle. The hottest upper I’ve seen recently is this Spike’s Tactical middy 16 with Magpul furniture. That’s just all kinds of sexy.
Of course, the whole reason the camera came out was to take a look at how the laser mounted to the rifle. It’s mounted on the left side of the rail so it can be activated with the support hand index finger or thumb, and even have the diode covered by by an index finger if light discipline is important.
I’m not the biggest fan of AR pattern rifles; I’d rather have an M1 Carbine because it’s just cooler or an AK because uh, I like AKs. Actually, there’s basically no reason in this modern age to select a Kalashnikov style rifle over an AR other than wanting to be contrary. The developments that have been made in 5.56 bullet technology, and the understanding we have now of the AR weapons system has effectively rendered the old reasoning for buying an AK completely moot. But that’s a post for another time.
If you’re building an AR, there’s always a temptation to select 2nd tier components, which I reckon is fine if you’re just building a range toy to plink with. If you’re building a serious rifle for defending your life, your home, or to take and win matches with, then it’s important to choose quality parts for your build. Or just do the smart thing and buy a Daniel Defense middy and be done with it.
