I want boring guns. I want a gun that’s so mundane, so uninteresting because it’s just reliable and shoots bullets all the time. Today, Tam is talking about her 180 degree change on carry guns, as she’s now carrying an M&P9 because that’s as close to something labeled “gun, 9mm” as you can get.
I went through much the same transformation over the course of the last couple of years. If I go back and look at my shooting logs from 2010, they’re all over the place. Then 2011 things get a little tighter, and now 3 months into 2012 I’ve only shot 1 gun seriously.
I have to laugh when I see people on the internet using my decision to run a Glock 21 as validation of their belief that Glocks are somehow better than brand X. I picked a Gen 4 Glock 21 because no one else was doing it so I knew I could maximize the traffic here at Gun Nuts by shooting one of those. You could have handed me an HK45, M&P45, Glock 21, even the new XDM45 Competition, or a USP-45 and my reaction would have pretty much been the same. All those guns work, and they’re all pretty boring. The Glock 21 just happens to be about as close to “Generic Gun, .45 ACP” that I could find.
Carrying a gun because it’s cool and different doesn’t have a lot of appeal to me. When I’m running thousands and thousands of rounds downrange each year, the more time I have to spend dicking around with the guts of my gun is less time that I’m on the range actually shooting it. Seems like simple math to me.
