It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of getting professional training if you carry a gun. Taking the responsibility to carry a firearm on a daily basis is actually a big deal, and I have and will continue to advocate for training as a part of bearing the responsibility of going armed in public. That being said, life should have priorities, and so should your self-defense plan. For example, you have a bug out bag for when the zombies come…but you can’t walk 500 meters without getting winded. Or your lack the physical strength to carry a 50lb child up a flight of stairs. If you’re thinking about dropping 400 bucks plus ammo and travel on a shooting class, but can’t do most of the things on the list below, I would honestly say that maybe a shooting class isn’t the best investment of time and money. Also, before someone makes a comment about being disabled or something, everything on the list below presumes that there are not actual physical conditions present that prevent you from being able to do the items listed.
Can you…
- Walk 3 miles?
- Do 10 or more pushups in a single set?
- Do 20 or more body weight squats in a single set?
- Do a pull up/chin up?
- Lift 25% of your body weight from the ground to over your head safely?
Nothing on that list is particularly difficult for a reasonably healthy person to accomplish. I know smokers that can accomplish everything on that list. It’s not like I’m saying “you should be able to run a marathon”. In fact, fitness and health are similar to shooting inasmuch as most people will never be as good at fitness as the professionals are. You probably won’t ever have six pack abs or look like Tony Horton, the same way you’ll probably never shoot a sub 5 second El Presidente or reload like JJ Racaza.
That’s okay, because most people’s goals with shooting is to have a good time and maybe get a little better. Which when you get down to it is a pretty good way to go about a lot of things, from shooting to fitness.
