Dianne Feinstein to reintroduce assault weapons ban bill

via Gun Nuts Media by Caleb on 9/6/12

Gun Control: because it’s never worked, so let’s do again only harder. Southern California Public Radio has article from Sen. Feinstein’s keynote speech to the California delegates from the currently running Democrat National Convention.

She promised California delegates she’d return to Congress to reintroduce “an updated assault weapons bill.”

At the delegates’ breakfast, she said that, “Weapons of war do not belong on our streets, in our classrooms, in our schools or in our movie theatres.”

I’m actually glad she came out and said it, because nothing loses elections for Democrats faster than talking up gun control. You want to get out the vote? Tell us you’re going to ban guns and you’ll see some pretty significant results. Now, Sen. Feinstein will probably never lose an election in California, but she wants to reinstate a piece of legislation that was at the same time completely useless and also very restrictive. I don’t think for a minute that a new assault weapons ban from Sen. Feinstein wouldn’t have the same sort of loopholes as the original.

Do I think that a reintroduced AWB has a snowball’s chance in hell of passing? Not as long as Republicans control at least one house of Congress. Which brings me back to the point from yesterday about volunteering and getting involved. Yes, we have been winning on an epic scale with pro-gun legislation and court battles, but if you get one message from this article let it be that the anti-gun politicians don’t quit. They’re not going to just roll up and go away because we’ve slapped their hand a couple of times in the Supreme Court.

I actually hate typing this sentence, because it sounds perilously close to the sort of fear-mongering that I really hate, but the truth of the matter is that a second Obama term is a serious threat to the 2nd Amendment. Obama appointed Supreme Court justices scare me a lot more than any of the bad stuff about Romney, and that’s why I’ll be volunteering for the Romney/Ryan campaign later in the year. A second Obama term with a Republican controlled Senate? Not so scary. A second Obama term with Republicans controlling both houses? Not really that scary at all.

As far as Sen. Feinstein’s plans to reintroduce the AWB after the election, our best bet is to make sure she doesn’t have a leg to stand on when the 113th Congress convenes on January 3rd, 2013.
