Gun Laws by State

via Gun Nuts Media by Caleb on 9/4/12

I travel a lot for work – it’s a function of the career path, and one for the most part that I enjoy. However, one of the most stress inducing parts of my travel is dealing with different state’s laws on firearms, concealed carry, transportation, etc. When I flew to Massachusetts for the 2012 IDPA Indoor Nationals, I took special care to make sure I was in full compliance with Massachusetts idiotic transportation and safe storage laws. Finding out what they were took a bunch of crawling around various websites to finally figure out how it worked. Another issue I frequently run into is the issue of carry permit reciprocity. For example, I was recently pulled over in South Dakota while carrying; South Dakota does not honor my Washington permit but they do honor my still valid Indiana permit. I was okay but could have been in some temporary hot water if the officer hadn’t been professional.

Thankfully, there is a new and quite handy resource out there for those travelling to other states with firearms, and it’s called Gun Laws by State. It’s available online in its entirety for free at the website I’ve linked to, along with a reciprocity resources map which is a really handy quick reference guide if you’re traveling. The real genius of the website/book is that it sites the relevant section of state law inline with the text when covering issues such as reciprocity or preemption.

What I really like about Gun Laws by State is that you can also get it in good old fashioned print; or on your kindle, nook, or iTunes reader. Buy Gun Laws by State at this link to have the guide with you at any time. Why is that useful in this modern age of 3G service and wifi everywhere? Because the truth is that sometimes you don’t have wifi everywhere, and having a simple, easy to use print guide to flip through actual pages can still be faster. Throw it in your carry-on bag, keep in the glove box of your rental car, do whatever. But no matter what it’s pretty handy to have around.
