The universe is apologizing to us. After the travesty at last year’s SHOT Show that was the Kel-Tec Failgun, this year the tactical shotgun market came roaring back with a slew of high quality shotguns from reputable manufacturers such as Remington and Mossberg. It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of shotguns as defensive or offensive weapons, and I am a firm believer in the good old Remington 870. This is why I’m so excited to see that Remington is now offering the Magpul equipped Remington 870 as a factory gun.
The first mod to the shotgun is the Magpul SGA stock, which yes does look goofy. But sometimes things that look weird work really well, and the stock actually felt awesome when I was using it in the display. The grip geometry allows you to have the benefits of a pistol grip without losing the ergonomics of a proper cheek weld and other advantages to a full stock. Sure, it’s a face only a mother could love, but if it works then who cares what it looks like?
Obviously, this model of 870 comes with the other tactical goodies you’d expect such as an extended magazine, muzzle break/breaching device and a fiber optic front sight. The other Magpul enhancement is the MOE foregrip, which replaces the standard Remington 870 foregrip.
I’ve always liked the MOE handguards for rifles, and having one on a shotgun makes good sense to me. Without having shot it (an important note) I like the Magpul equipped Remington 870 quite a bit, but it does remain to be seen if the Magpul gear offers any performance enhancements in actual live fire. I believe that the stock is a definite improvement over other stocks on the market, but we’ll find out later in the year when we set up an 870 to these specifications.
I have Magpul SGA stock and forend on my Remington 870. They are very big improvement over standard stock and forend. I have reviewed them here: Magpul SGA Stock and MOE Forend for Remington 870 Review
