Animals Are Natural Meditators
By Doug Knueven

Q.) Every time I sit down to meditate my cat wants to get in on it. I have always heard to put animals in another room while meditating so they won't disturb you so that's what I do, but she is quite persistent. Is there anything wrong with meditating with a pet?

A.) I too have heard from experts that you should lock animals out of your meditation practice. I think those who make such recommendations have a more distant relationship with their pets than many of us. As one who meditates, and who is a student of the Cayce readings and a holistic veterinarian, I'm here to tell you that it is fine to meditate with your pet. In fact, I would say it is better than fine.

elephant and cat meditateFor me, the purpose of meditation is to connect with our Creator and all of creation. There are many ways to strive toward this goal. Some people use a mindfulness approach and pay attention to their breath. Others repeat a mantra over and over. The Cayce approach involves the use of an affirmation. The words of the affirmation are repeated in order to evoke a feeling of peace and oneness.

As they say, "Different strokes for different folks." Each individual must find her or his way to quiet the mind and go within. There are those who find their pets to be distractions (and this certainly may depend on the pet's personality, too.) But for those of us who have a deep relationship with our animals, making them part of the meditation practice can be meaningful and even helpful.

Here's the way I look at it. Pets fill a need in the lives of those who love animals. With their instinct to comfort and heal us, they demonstrate qualities that even humans sometimes lack. I believe that pets have such an effect because they help us maintain contact with the natural world—a connection which our modern lifestyles tend to eliminate.

Nature is infused with the divine. It is impossible for most people to study biology without developing a sense of awe for the beauty of the balance that is maintained in intricate, natural systems. Each of the billions of cells of the body has a life of its own, and yet they all cooperate to function as a whole. Animals, plants, microorganisms, and inert materials have developed amazingly complicated relationships in every ecosystem in the world. Even the celestial bodies have an orderly rhythm that mystifies the human mind. All of creation is alive with a palpable, heavenly heartbeat.

With a purr, a nudge, a lick or a wag, our pets can reunite us with the mysteries of the universe. For me, connecting with a pet on a spiritual level is one way of connecting with the divine.

Does this bunny meditate too?

Here's how it works for me:

As my wife Judy and I sit down to meditate in the morning, our pets jump on our laps. As I relax, I become aware of my breath. I imagine that God is breathing the "breath of life" into me. I realize that the same breath of life is flowing within my four-legged companion.

I envision the amazing underlying life force, Spirit, which is stirring within both our bodies. As I become more aware of my dog lying in my lap, I feel her warmth and I feel her chest rise and fall.

I imagine this warm feeling of love expanding in my chest, and feel it overflow and embrace this special little being. I allow the love to continue to expand and imagine we are both floating in a sea of love. This feeling joins me with all of creation and I melt into the Oneness. I then enter the silence maintaining the feeling of oneness. My dog helps me anchor that feeling.

I would love to report that things happen just this way every day at my house but that would be a bit of a stretch. However, on those mornings when the stars are aligned, it is a beautiful thing.

The Nimble Empire: In Defense of Cable [Cable]

via Gizmodo by Tim Carmody - Wired on 3/30/12

One of the most fascinating stories of the last year has been the evolution of Amazon Prime. In exchange for a recurring fee, you get access to a huge, varied media library: movies, TV shows and books. And yeah, some of that content isn't all that great, and even more isn't stuff I would choose, but a lot of it is amazing. And yeah - I can't access all of that content on any device I want, but most of it I can, and the range of those devices, especially for digital video, is growing. More »

Clean Bottle Runner – Store Your Phone and Keys in Your Water Bottle

via The Gadgeteer by Janet Cloninger on 3/30/12

Well, you don’t exactly store them in the water bottle – more with the Clean Bottle.  A while ago, Julie told us about the Clean Bottle, a 22-ounce plastic water bottle with a leak-proof screw-off bottom for easy cleaning.  The Clean Bottle Runner includes a jacket that has a clear, play-though plastic pocket for your phone or MP3 player in the front and a back pocket that can hold your keys, ID, cash, credit cards, or energy gels.  You don’t have to worry that the Runner jacket will fall off as you run, because the screw-on bottom helps hold it in place.  The Clean Bottle Runner will begin shipping in May, 2012.  Pre-order now for $30.

Buried City Found in Egypt

via unknowncountry by astrieber on 3/30/12

In a recent NASA satellite survey of Egypt, archaeologists discovered 17 pyramids that had been buried in the sand, as well as more than 1,000 tombs and 3,000 ancient settlements. Ground level excavations have already confirmed the existence of two of the pyramids. Ancient Egyptian buildings were made of mud brick, which is denser than the sand surrounding them, which allowed the satellites to spot the buried shapes. The scientists think that, using satellites, they may eventually discover an entire lost city.

Google Drive leaks suggest 5GB free storage, in-app document editing

Google Drive leaks suggest 5GB free storage, in-app document editing
Mountain View has been leaking Google Drive details like a glacial trickle, but we still have no firm notion of how much free cloud storage it'll bring or just how deeply it'll be integrated with other services. There have been rumors of a Dropbox-like 2GB limit, but now a screenshot purporting to show the beta version's main welcome page points to a healthy 5GB instead. Moreover, Google's Support portal mentions that the Drive app for Android will have document-editing capabilities, which brings us back to the question of whether this is a whole new service, or an add-on to Google Docs or indeed a complete re-branding of Google's documents platform. Regardless, calling it 'Drive' still makes it sound like sat nav.

New Trojans Use Old Tricks to Infiltrate Macs [Apple]

via Gizmodo by Andrew Tarantola on 3/29/12

The adage that Apples don't get viruses might soon prove to be false. Security analysts have identified a pair of Trojans aboard the computers of multiple Pro-Tibetan NGOs that appear to infiltrate Macs using the same exploit that's worked on Windows systems for years. More »

Hitch-mounted Shooting Bench

via The Firearm Blog by Steve (The Firearm Blog) on 3/29/12

Brian, a reader of the blog, started up a business with his father and brother to make and sell a nifty hitch-mounted two-person shooting bench.

Brian says ...

First off, we're a start-up business. The team consists of myself, my dad, and my brother. I'm a mechanical engineer and I did the design work, while my dad and brother guided the design process with their experience (my brother is the gun nut). The three of us also fabricate everything ourselves in the shop of a barn here in North Idaho. If this ever takes off beyond our capabilities, we'll look into outsourcing, but for now it's all us from picking up steel to painting and packaging.

I've attached a few photos to show the various mounting options and the bench in use. Basically, you can hook up the bench (fully assembled and ready to use) to your vehicle in a vertical position so it won't hit the ground or extend past the 3-ft legal limit beyond the rear bumper. When you arrive at your shooting location, you pull one pin and move the bench to the horizontal position. You then drop the stabilizers, maybe adjust your table height if needed, and you're ready to shoot. The tailgate on a pickup also serves as a handy table to stage ammo, clips, guns, etc. If you don't want the bench mounted to a vehicle (or if you don't have a 2" receiver), you can set the bench directly on the ground using the same parts that attach it to the vehicle. Overall, it's a fairly versatile system that just about anybody could use.

The bench is aimed at the average recreational shooter. I live out in the boonies, so a lot of people in this type of area don't go to "real" shooting ranges. This is why we came up with the bench -- easy to transport, no hassle setting up, holds two people, and works. Users can adjust table height (accommodates sitting or standing positions) and the seats move in all three directions so you can find the perfect setup. Two shooters can use the bench at the same time, and we include a shell deflector to prevent hitting your buddy with hot brass.

Construction of the bench is all steel tubing. The tables, seats, shell deflectors, and accessory boxes are made of wood, and we offer two different benches -- the standard and deluxe. The metal and hardware on both benches are identical. The wood on the standard bench is 7/16" painted OSB -- works just fine for those who don't want to spend extra on the appearance. The deluxe bench uses 3/4" stained birch plywood -- a little sturdier, and a whole lot nicer looking. We're working on developing various accessory components and other "special use" benches, but they haven't been released for sale yet.

They are selling the standard bench for $389 and the deluxe model for $489.

I wish Brian and his family the best of luck with their new business venture.

VB Berapi LP06, Worst Gun Design Ever?

via The Firearm Blog by Steve (The Firearm Blog) on 3/29/12

Back in 2006 a Malaysian company, Vita Berapi, showed off a range of new of assault rifles and pistols. The entire line looked so goofy that the first time I saw them I assumed it was a hoax. I am still not 100% convinced it is real, but I was sent some photos by a reader that look authentic. The VB Berapi LP06 is the primary rifle of the line ...

I have seen better looking prop guns on YouTube videos made by 8 year olds. The ring at the top is supposed to hold a scope. Consumer-legal "pistol" rifles in the United States have better butt stocks than this assault rifle. You can see why I think it looks like a hoax.

VB Berapi LP06, Worst Gun Design Ever? photo

Their "combat" pistol, the LP-01, can be converted into a "long range" submachine gun called the LP-02 that includes a folding stock, forgrip and large capacity magazine. I like the folding stock that incorporates iron sights so the pistol can be used when it is folded up. This weapon makes slightly more sense than that unsightly bullpup rifle, but still looks to big to be practical.

Kris Longknife: Welcome Home – Go Away

If you love space adventure sci-fi as I do, then you should enjoy the Kris Longknife series

via Kris Longknife's Blog by Mike Shepherd on 3/29/12

Yesterday I finished Welcome Home – Go Away and turned it over to my second reader to comb out as many nits as possible.

For those of you who love Grampa Trouble and Gramma Ruth, this will be fun. Most of the story is in Grampa Trouble’s view point, and what he’s viewing is Grampa Ray, king to some, as he struggles to juggle the hot potato that Kris dropped in his lap toward the end of Daring.

This will give you the back story leading up to that disastrous meeting between Kris and the unholy trinity. You’ll find out what Grampa Trouble thinks about not being there and what he and Gramma Ruth intend to do about it.

It’s a great bridge between Daring and Furious, and you really want to read this e-special when it comes out in September/October of this year.
