New for 2012 is the Sig Sauer P224 the first ever subcompact classic series Sig. Excerpt from the Sig press release:

SIG SAUER introduces the P224, the first true subcompact in its classic all-metal firearms line. Ideal for concealed or off-duty carry, the P224 offers all of the features consumers expect, with one small change.

Based on the P229®, one of the most prolific sidearms in federal law enforcement, the P224 takes the same hammer-fire reliability and lightweight all-metal frame and puts them in a subcompact package with all of the familiar SIG SAUER controls and functions.

Despite its small size, the P224 maintains a double-stack magazine for a capacity of 11 rounds of 9mm and 10 rounds of .40S&W or .357SIG giving the P224 a decided advantage over most subcompact competitors. Newer model P229 magazines can also be used for an even greater round count.

“Almost 80 percent of federal law enforcement agencies have chosen the P229 for its durability, reliability and safety,” said Ron Cohen, SIG SAUER President and Chief Executive Officer. “The P224 may be cut down in size, but it hasn’t lost an ounce of these performance features.”

Featuring a lightweight alloy frame, the P224 will be available in a number of configurations. Initial models will be available with the Double-Action Kellerman™ (DAK) trigger and be chambered in .40S&W. and .357SIG Traditional DA/SA triggers, and 9mm options will be available in the future.

I have a deep love for the Sig P-series of pistols, and one of the best guns I believe on the market for concealed carry is the Sig P239. I like the additional ammo capacity of the P224 and the fact that it will take P229 magazines as well. Once they come out with a standard DA/SA version that can have a Short Reset Trigger put in it, I’ll be all over it.

This is what I want to see more of from Sig, for the record. I know the cool thing to do right now is try and make a polymer striker fired pistol like Glock, S&W, etc but you’re Sig Sauer. I buy Sigs specifically because they’re not polymer or striker fired pistols. So yes, Sig more like this. Like I said, give me a P224 with an SRT and I’ll be on it so fast it’ll make your head spin. More like this, please.
