I was shocked by the price of ammunition when I went to by .45 ACP for my son's 1929 Thompson submachine gun (semi-auto version). .45 ACP is a caliber that I don't hand load, so I went to the local gun store to buy it. Prices ranged $29 to $35 for a box of 50 rounds. Another caliber that I didn't by dies for after I purchased my SKS (Chinese version of the AK-47) as ammo for this was so cheep at $3 to $5 per box of 20 rounds. Saturday price was $11 a box, nearly 3 times as much as I previously paid.
I haven't bought factory ammo in at least 3 or 4 years do to I haven't been doing that much shooting and hand load most of the calibers I shoot. I'm well stocked with Cases, powder and lead, (I cast my own for .38, .357, 9mm and .223) the only thing I have to buy when I run out are the primers.
Considering the cost of factory ammo, I'm to only shoot the calibers I hand load.
