One of the first guns I ever carried was a Ruger GP100, and interestingly enough it was also one of the first guns I ever bought a proper, quality holster and belt for. Both were leather options from Galco, and they worked pretty well. An OWB holster + a GP100 was difficult to conceal, but back then I also didn’t understand the concept of “dress around the gun.” So here I am now five years later looking at the same size gun, and wondering how I’m supposed to conceal this?
The first thing I’m going to do is ditch the factory Hogue grips on it for a set of Crimson Trace lasergrips. The footprint of the CTC grips is smaller than the Hogue grips, which are roughly the size of an original XBox controller. Obviously, a good holster and belt combo are a must, and I have ordered a couple of different set-ups. The first is a Galco Combat Master OWB holster, which will work pretty well any time I have a jacket or outer garment on over the gun. For more discreet carry, I’m going to try and use one of the Rogers Custom Kydex holsters that I linked to last week. Appendix carry with a 4 inch GP100 is going to be…interesting, to say the least.
We’ll see how the different holsters shake out in weeks to come. Attempting to really conceal a small artillery piece the size of the GP100 is no mean feat, but it also helps to show that you really can carry a full size gun. Because if a guy my size can conceal one of those, there’s no excuse for not being able to at least carry a Glock 19.
