I don’t like where this string is going

via Gun Nuts Media by Caleb on 8/9/12

Because it’s going in the trigger guard of my gun. When I first moved to the Seattle area, I took a class from InSights Training Center, where the instructor said “cut those stupid adjustment strings off your sweaters if you use them while you’re carrying.” I was a bit skeptical, but I went ahead and did it because in theory it made sense that an adjustment string like the one pictured could get into the trigger guard of the pistol and cause an ND while holstering.

Turns out the InSights instructors were right. It seems those stupid pull strings really can cause an ND. From Pistol-Training:

In June of this year, a law enforcement officer working with a federal task force wasn’t so lucky. The adjuster got stuck inside the trigger guard as he was holstering his SIG P229 DAK in a SERPA holster.

The shooter took a round of 180gr Federal HST to his calf. You can see a photo of the wound by clicking this link. It’s not particularly gory but it’s a real gunshot wound so browse at your own risk.

This, like using SERPA holsters falls into my category of “why risk it?” Sure, plenty of people wear clothes with these things on them all day and have never shot themselves. But why risk it? Especially if you’re going to be attending a training class where you’ll be holstering and drawing your gun a lot. It just doesn’t make sense to add that sort of unnecessary danger to your day.
