The National Firearms Museum is part of an elite group. Yes, they're a museum. Sure, they have an incredible collection of American History. But the elite group part of our meaning is that now they are part of the Blue Star Museum Initiative.
Created by the National Endowment of the Arts, in a collaborative effort with Blue Star Families and the Department of Defense, Blue Star Museums provide free admission to military personnel as well as members of their family. A summertime project, Blue Star begins on Memorial Day and runs through Labor Day.
"The National Firearms Museum has a tradition of being open and free to the public," said Museum Director Jim Supica. "As part of the Blue Star network, we're joining other great institutions like the Smithsonian in DC, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Petersen Automotive Museum in California."
Launched in 2010, almost 2,000 museums across the nation now take part in this program.
"Our exhibits tell the story of America through firearms. The wars we fought, the battles we won and the sacrifices made by the men and women of our nation's military. Providing a fun, educational setting for our service members to bring their friends and families is an honor that all of us here at the museum welcome."
